If you are shopping for a dyno tune based on price alone, you’re already looking at it the wrong way.
A dyno tune is not a commodity. Not all dyno tunes are created equal, and every tuner will make different decisions based on their experience, the platform, the combination, the fuel system, the intended use of the vehicle, and what they see in the data.
The better question is not, “Who has the cheapest dyno tune?”
The better question is, “Who has the most experience with a combination like mine, and can I trust them to make the right decisions?”
How Much Does a Dyno Tune Usually Cost?
At Kaizen Speed, dyno tuning typically starts around:

$650 for basic bolt-on combinations

$750 and up for cammed naturally aspirated combinations

Up to approximately $1,500 for more complex combinations
That range covers roughly 90% of the vehicles we dyno tune.
HP Tuners credits are additional because they are purchased separately for the vehicle, but those are generally a one-time licensing cost.
Standalone engine management systems such as MoTeC and Haltech are typically around $1,500 for tuning, plus any additional wiring, setup, sensor configuration, and initial ECU configuration time required.
The exact price depends heavily on the vehicle and modifications.
A basic naturally aspirated bolt-on vehicle is usually much simpler to tune than a supercharged vehicle with an aftermarket camshaft, upgraded fuel system, multiple fuels, and aggressive power goals.
In general, the rowdier the combination, the more time it takes to tune properly.

What Are You Actually Paying For With a Dyno Tune?
You are not just paying for time on a chassis dyno.
You are paying for experience.
That is probably the single most important thing to understand.
A tuner who has worked with the same platform for years has seen patterns that someone new to the platform simply has not.
They know what the engine normally likes.
They know what usually breaks.
They know what a healthy fuel system looks like.
They know how much ignition timing similar combinations typically tolerate.
They know when a knock signal appears legitimate and when something may be causing false knock.
They also know when it is time to stop pushing a combination.
That knowledge only comes from tuning a lot of vehicles over a long period of time.
At Kaizen Speed, we only tune platforms we are familiar with. If we do not believe we can properly tune your combination, we would rather recommend someone who specializes in it than learn on your vehicle.

The Cheapest Dyno Tune Can Become the Most Expensive
We have seen some unbelievable things come through the shop over the years.
One of the worst was a calibration where the knock sensors had been completely disabled.
That is crazy.
Knock sensors are there to help protect the engine. Simply turning off an important safeguard because it is inconvenient is not the same thing as properly understanding what the engine is telling you.
We have also seen:

Burned spark plug wires

Collapsed exhaust flex sections

Misfires under boost

Broken spark plugs (tiny cracks in the ceramic)

Vehicles that simply were not mechanically ready to be tuned
By far, one of the most common problems we encounter is a fuel system that cannot keep up with the engine.
A customer may have a perfectly good engine, supercharger, camshaft, and exhaust system, but if the fuel pump or injectors cannot support the requested power level, the tune cannot fix that.
A tuner cannot tune around missing fuel.

A Good Dyno Tune Is More Than Wide-Open Throttle
One of the biggest misconceptions about dyno tuning is that the entire process is about making a wide-open-throttle pull and producing the biggest number possible.
It isn’t.
Startup and drivability can take the majority of the tuning time.
In many cases, that is where 90% of the work is.
The vehicle needs to:

Start properly

Idle properly
-
Drive cleanly at low speed

Transition smoothly between throttle positions

Behave correctly under light load
-
Respond predictably in normal traffic
-
Operate safely at wide-open throttle
A car that makes a great dyno number but surges, stalls, bucks, misfires, or drives poorly is not properly tuned.
What Does a Kaizen Speed Dyno Tune Include?
Our tuning process includes a startup calibration, dyno tuning, and street driving after the dyno work is complete.
We do not simply copy and paste values from another vehicle.

Even two cars with very similar parts can behave differently.
We take the time to dial in the actual vehicle in front of us.
Dual-fuel setups and flex-fuel configurations carry an additional charge because they require additional calibration and validation.
More complex combinations require more time.
For aggressive builds making over 1,000 wheel horsepower, we may also read spark plugs and make recommendations based on what we see.
We will also tell the customer about problems we have seen on similar combinations in the past.
That may involve the fuel system, spark plugs, ignition system, engine limits, pulley combinations, boost level, or other components.
The goal is not just to get the car off the dyno.
The goal is to help the customer avoid problems we have already watched other people experience.
Mechanical Problems Are the Worst Thing You Can Bring to a Dyno Appointment
The most important thing you can do before a dyno appointment is make sure the vehicle is mechanically sound.
No calibration can fix a mechanical problem.
If the vehicle is a fresh build or has not been driven yet, contact us before attempting to drive it aggressively.
Once the tuning deposit is paid and the appointment is scheduled, we can provide a startup calibration.
That allows you to start the vehicle and drive it around the block to make sure there are no major problems before the dyno appointment.
That simple step can save a tremendous amount of wasted time.
Before tuning, we also want accurate information about the vehicle.
That includes the exact brand and part number of components such as:

Fuel pumps
-
Injectors
-
Fuel pressure regulators
-
Spark plugs
Spark plug selection is especially important on boosted applications.
The heat range must be appropriate, and the plug gap cannot be too wide.
Misfires under boost are extremely common, and they are often caused by excessive plug gap or burned and damaged spark plug wires.
We have customers fill out our tuning checklist before their appointment so we can review the combination and ask questions before the vehicle ever reaches the dyno.
Experience With Your Platform Matters
The biggest red flag when choosing a tuner is someone who is unfamiliar with your platform.
Experience is the best teacher.
The longer someone has worked with a specific engine, ECU, transmission, and combination, the more useful information they have accumulated.
For example, years of tuning LS and LT combinations gives us a very good idea of what specific factory components will tolerate.

We know from experience that a stock-rod LS3 can make around 750 wheel horsepower reliably in many combinations when everything is done correctly.
We also know that the factory LT4 and LT5 piston share the same part number and have proven capable of supporting more than 1,100 wheel horsepower in the right combination.
On the other hand, the factory LT1 piston has relatively narrow, brittle ring lands.
Because of that, it does not surprise us when a 650-wheel-horsepower LT1 shows up with broken ring lands.
That experience changes how we advise customers.
If an LT1 customer wants to install a smaller supercharger pulley and add more boost, we are going to have a conversation about the risk before blindly chasing another 30 horsepower.
That is part of what you are paying for.
How Much Timing Should a Dyno Tuner Add?
There is a point where adding additional ignition timing no longer creates additional power.
This is commonly referred to as MBT, or minimum timing for best torque.
Every engine and combination is different.
An experienced tuner who has worked with a particular platform repeatedly usually has a good idea of how much timing a combination should tolerate and how it should respond.
That experience helps distinguish between actual detonation and situations where a knock sensor may be reacting to unrelated mechanical noise.
It also helps determine when the combination has reached a sensible limit.
More boost and more timing are not automatically better.
At some point, you are adding stress without creating meaningful additional power.
Knowing when to stop is one of the most valuable skills a tuner develops.
We also push our own vehicles hard.
That matters because you learn a tremendous amount by finding the limits on your own equipment rather than experimenting with a customer’s.
Why Track Results Matter More Than Dyno Numbers
A dyno is a tool.
It is not the finish line.
When evaluating a tuner, ask what similar combinations they have tuned.
Then ask for track results.
A vehicle that produces an impressive dyno graph but performs poorly at the racetrack does not prove much.
Track results show whether the entire combination actually works.
They expose problems with power delivery, heat, transmission behavior, consistency, fueling, and calibration that may not be obvious from a single dyno pull.
Look through the tuner’s social media history too.
Do not just look at what they posted last month.
Scroll back several years.
See how long they have actually been working with your platform.
Experience leaves a trail.
Follow-Up Support Matters
The tuning relationship should not end when the vehicle rolls off the dyno.
Cars change.
Parts fail.
Fuel changes.
Customers make modifications.
Sometimes a question comes up several weeks later.
You want to know your tuner will still answer the phone or respond to your message.
Follow-up support is a major part of choosing the right shop.
The cheapest tune is not inexpensive if you cannot get help when something goes wrong.
So, How Much Should You Spend on a Dyno Tune?
For most modified late-model performance vehicles, a professional dyno tune will generally fall somewhere between approximately $650 and $1,500, depending on the combination and complexity.
But that should not be the primary way you choose a tuner.
If you are comparing dyno tunes only by price, you have already lost.
Instead, ask:

How long have you tuned this platform?

How many combinations similar to mine have you done?

What problems do you commonly see?

What power level do you consider safe for my engine?

Do you provide startup calibration?

Do you street drive the vehicle after dyno tuning?

A good tuner should be able to answer those questions confidently.
The cost of a dyno tune is small compared with the cost of an engine, transmission, or entire build.
Choose the person making decisions about your engine based on experience, not because they were $200 cheaper.
